Corona Sportsmen’s Club – Junior Shoot
Well, it's official. We are on our way to forming our newest shoot. This shoot will be a "Junior Shoot". We haven't picked a time slot to squeeze the shoot in to, but most likely it will be run at the same time as one of our other shoots. That way we keep the weekend afternoons and days open for members open shooting. Here are some of the particulars.
· The shoot will be open to all junior shooters (under the age of 18)
· The Board has determined that the shoot will be a “No Cost” shoot. No entrance fees will be charged.
· Rifles and ammunition will be supplied by the club at "no cost" to the shooter. (except for BSA merit badge, which will incur a minor ammunition fee). No other rifles will be allowed. This will keep the playing field level for all shooters and give them the opportunity to acknowledge their skills as riflemen.
· Shooting distances will be in accordance with NRA and BSA guidelines, which are from 50 ft. to 50 yards
· Shooters will learn safe handling as well as marksmanship skills.
Program will include:
Boy Scouts of America Rifle merit badge - Earn your BSA Rifle Merit Badge.
NRA Light Rifle Prone Qualification. In the NRA program the shooters will be able to earn various levels of proficiency and receive patches, rockers, cert and medals. The levels are; Pro-Marksman, Marksman, Marksman 1st Class, Sharpshooter, Expert, Distinguished Expert.
Fun shoots at various times during the year. Maybe even a father/son, father daughter, mother/son, mother/daughter shoot.
Now for the big part, "No adult participation allowed" Adults/Parents are welcome to come and observe or just hang out by the picnic area etc. but they are encouraged to avoid interacting with the juniors as they participate in this event.
WHAT WE NEED
We are looking for help in running this event. If you have NRA and/or BSA certifications in Rifle shooting, we especially need your help. Other members are also welcome to help with this shoot. There is no commitment; whatever time you can donate would be helpful. But I must warn you, it is fun working in this environment and can get addicting as you watch the shooters improve and learn new skills.
We also need help with the following:
· Making target frames
· Making sand bags for rests (need old lead shot bags or equivalent)
· Making ammunition blocks
· Making shooting mats
· Concrete work on lower range
· Making bench rest tables (later on in the program)
This program is being started with donations. After the initial rifle purchase of 8 rifles, the club will vote on purchasing the balance of the equipment needed for this event. But the rifles cost $240/ea.(+$46 DROS & Tax.) They are Savage Mark II-FVT's and will be bought from the Civilian Marksmanship Program. I have purchased the first rifle and will be putting it through the paces over the next few weeks.
At the Members meeting last night, we received a generous offer from Jerry & Annie of "Annie Get Your Guns" in Corona. They will be purchasing one of the rifles for the club shoot also. So we have 2 guns so far. We only need 6 more to start the program. I also received $120 in donations from various members towards the purchase of these rifles at the meeting. (That's what I love about this club. The members always come through)
If each member donated $10 we would have more than enough to cover the rifles.
If you are interested in donating towards the purchase of these rifles, it would be greatly appreciated. You can put cash or a check in an envelope and give it to any Shoot Chairman or Board Member. They will see that the money get to me for the program.
You can also send money directly via Paypal https://www.paypal.com/ (https://www.paypal.com/)
Just send it to corless1@yahoo.com and put "CSC Junior Program" in the message box.
We will be tracking our progress and reporting it in the monthly newsletter.
